Residential Moving in Montreal: Our Rates, the Time Each Home Takes, and Your Free Quote

Residential Moving

Looking for a residential moving company in Montreal? Here are our prices, upfront.

A residential move starts at $140 an hour in the off-season. That rate covers two movers, the truck, blankets and all the protective equipment. For a 3½ less than 25 km away, expect about $770 before tax.

Déménagement Total is a residential mover serving Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, the South Shore and the North Shore. We have been moving studios, condos, houses and offices since 2016. Our customers have left us 2,992 Google reviews.

This page shows our prices by home size, our rates by date, and what each hour includes.

How Much Does a Residential Move Cost in Montreal?

Residential Moving - 2

A residential move in Montreal costs between $490 and $1,710 in the off-season, depending on the size of your home. The price depends on three things: the number of hours of work, the number of movers and the date you choose.

Here are our prices for a local move under 25 km, in the off-season.

Residential moving prices in Montréal, off-season, under 25 km
DwellingMoversTruckEstimated timeEstimated price
Studio (1½)222 ft3h 30m$490
2½222 ft4h 30m$630
3½222 ft5h 30m$770
4½222 ft6h 30m$910
5½326 to 32 ft7h$1,260
6½326 to 32 ft7h 30m$1,350
House326 to 32 ft8h 30m$1,530
Large property326 to 32 ft9h 30m$1,710

Taxes are extra. Every move includes at least 1 hour of travel (round trip), billed even when the trip is shorter.

These are estimates for a typical home with easy access to the truck.

From a 5½ up, we send three movers and a bigger truck. The hour costs more, but the work goes faster. For a large home, three movers often cost less than two.

Heavy items are not included in these prices. A piano, a safe, a pool table or any item of 250 lb or more is billed separately. We confirm that amount in your quote.

Our Hourly Moving Rates, by Time of Year

Residential Moving Company in Montreal

The same 3½ costs $770 in the off-season and $1,760 on July 1. Your moving date changes your bill more than any other factor.

Hourly moving rate in Montréal by period
Period2 movers3 moversA 3½ costs you
Off-season - 11 July to 24 May$140/h$180/h$770
Month end - 30 to 1, outside high season$160/h$200/h$880
High season - 25 May to 10 July$180/h$220/h$990
Moving week - 27 June to 2 July$270/h$360/h$1,485
1 July$320/h$380/h$1,760

Taxes are extra. Every move includes at least 1 hour of travel (round trip), billed even when the trip is shorter.

Why such a difference? In Quebec, most leases end on June 30. Tens of thousands of households move the same week, and every truck and crew in the province is booked at the same time.

We publish this rate because it is real. A mover who promises you their usual price for July 1 will not be able to keep that promise.

If your date is flexible, you save a lot. Moving on August 15 instead of July 1 takes a 3½ from $1,760 down to $770. That is a $990 difference for exactly the same work.

Watch out for the end of the month. From the 30th to the 1st, demand goes up and so does the rate. A move on the 15th costs less than a move on the 31st.

What the Hour Includes: Truck, Crew and Equipment

Residential Moving - 3

Our hourly rate covers the full crew, the truck and all protective equipment. There is no fuel charge, no equipment fee and no blanket fee.

Every truck leaves with:

  • about a hundred moving blankets;
  • stretch wrap and bubble wrap for fragile items;
  • 5 to 10 wardrobe boxes;
  • straps and tie-downs to secure furniture;
  • 2 to 7 four-wheel dollies and 2 hand trucks;
  • protective mattress covers;
  • neoprene runners to protect your floors;
  • TV boxes from 32 to 72 inches, on request.

Here is a complete calculation, the way our calculator does it:

Example: 4½, 25 km, 40 boxes
Travel (round trip)1h
Moving the 4½5h 30m
40 boxes1h
Total hours7h 30m
Rate, 2 movers$140/h
Estimate$1,050 before tax

Taxes are extra. Every move includes at least 1 hour of travel (round trip), billed even when the trip is shorter.

The final price depends on loading time, furniture disassembly and reassembly, available parking, the distance between the door and the truck, and elevator access.

Residential Moving to Laval, Longueuil and the South Shore: Is Travel Extra?

blog

Every move includes one hour of travel, which covers the round trip up to about 25 km. A move from Montreal to Laval, Longueuil, Brossard or Saint-Lambert therefore costs nothing extra in travel compared with a move within your own neighbourhood.

How to Pay Less for Your Residential Move

residential moving

We bill by the hour, so every hour you save us comes straight off your price. Here is what actually works.

Choose an off-season date. It is by far the biggest lever. Between July 11 and May 24, the rate drops to $140 an hour. Also avoid the 30th, the 31st and the 1st of each month.

Pack yourself. Boxes that are closed, labelled and stacked near the door save an hour or more. If you are short on time, our packing service takes care of it.

Take large furniture apart ahead of time. A bed and a table that are already disassembled load much faster.

Book the elevator and parking. A truck parked 40 metres from the door adds hours of walking for the crew. Booking your building’s elevator avoids waiting.

Empty the fridge and the drawers. Appliances go first. If they are ready, everything else follows.

Residential Moving Services Across Quebec

Residential Moving - 4

Residential moving in Montreal, on the South Shore and on the North Shore: our moving company covers the whole Montreal area and travels anywhere in Quebec. One point of contact, whatever the type of move.

Local moving. A move from Montreal to another neighbourhood on the island, or to a nearby city. This is most of our work: a move in Montreal goes from loading to unloading in the same day.

South Shore moving. We serve Brossard, Longueuil, Boucherville, Saint-Lambert and all of Montérégie. The South Shore is less than 30 minutes from our warehouses, which keeps travel time short.

North Shore moving. Laval, Terrebonne, Repentigny, Blainville, Saint-Jérôme and the Laurentians. The North Shore is also part of our everyday territory. Travel follows the same schedule as everywhere else, with no mileage fee.

Long-distance moving. Quebec City, Trois-Rivières and Ottawa are billed by the hour, with the travel time from our schedule. For Toronto, Halifax or any other destination more than 300 km away, the price is fixed and confirmed in advance.

Many moving companies stick to one area, then turn the job down or add fees once you leave their zone. As a residential mover established in the Montreal area, we take on your move whether it is local or long distance. The service is the same either way: same crew, same equipment, same way of working.

Full-Service Moving: Handling, Packing and Storage

Residential Moving - 5

A full-service move means you have nothing to carry. We arrive with the moving truck, the equipment and the crew, and we handle all the lifting.

Our full-service package includes:

  • packing and unpacking, before and after the move;
  • furniture disassembly and reassembly, including in a condo with an elevator;
  • storage in a heated warehouse, if your new home is not ready;
  • piano, safe and pool table moving;
  • last-minute moving, when your date changes without warning.

Pianos and pool tables need special equipment and a crew that knows how to use it. We take the pool table apart, move the slate separately and put everything back together on arrival.

We work 7 days a week, including weekends and statutory holidays. A quick move on a Sunday costs the same rate as one on a Tuesday: only the time of year changes the price.

FAQ

What Is the Average Cost of a Residential Move in Montreal?
A residential move in Montreal starts at $140 an hour in the off-season, for two movers and a truck. A 3½ less than 25 km away comes to about $770 before tax. In high season, the same move costs $990. The rate depends on the date and the number of movers, never on mileage.
How Much Should I Budget to Move a House?
Expect about $1,530 before tax for a house in the off-season. We send three movers and a 26 to 32 ft truck, for about 8h 30m of work. In high season, plan for $1,870 instead. For a large property, the time goes up to about 9h 30m.
How Long Does a Residential Move Take?
A studio takes about 3h 30m, a 3½ about 5h 30m and a house about 8h 30m. These times include one hour of travel, for a trip under 25 km. The actual time depends on the floor, elevator access, parking and how many boxes are ready to go.
Why Does Moving on July 1 Cost More?
Because almost every lease in Quebec ends on June 30. On July 1, our rate goes up to $320 an hour, compared with $140 in the off-season. A 3½ then costs $1,760 instead of $770. If your date is flexible, moving outside May 25 to July 10 is the one decision that really changes your bill.
Are Travel and Mileage Billed Extra?
Travel is part of the hourly rate. Every move includes one hour of travel, which covers the round trip up to about 25 km. A move to Laval, Longueuil, Brossard or Saint-Lambert therefore costs nothing extra in travel. Farther away, travel time follows our schedule: 1h 30m for Repentigny or Terrebonne, 2h 30m for Granby. There is never a mileage fee.
What Is the Difference Between a Local Move and a Long-Distance Move?
A move within Quebec or to Ottawa is billed by the hour, even to Quebec City or Trois-Rivières: only the travel time increases. For Toronto, Halifax or any other destination more than 300 km away, we offer a fixed price, confirmed before departure. A fixed price protects you from surprises on the road.
